Dear Friends of WWKD,

For many of us, this is a season of giving and thanksgiving. Our lives certainly have been touched in profound ways during the last several years. For those of us involved with WWKD, this year has deeply stirred our hearts.

Sadly, the people of Haiti have borne the brunt of major disasters during 2021. Their president was assassinated in July leading to wide-spread violence as rival gangs fight for political control. Lawlessness is rampant. Then, in August, the country was hit by a magnitude 7.2 earthquake, followed three days later by tropical depression Grace, heavy rains and major flooding and landslides. The poorest of the poor have faced overwhelming challenges this year.

Where does WWKD come in? Let’s first go back to the beginning. In August of 2012, Kelsey and her daughter Annabelle took their first trip to Haiti to visit the orphans and widows in Ouanaminthe in northeast Haiti. That’s when it all started; their love for the people of Haiti and desire to help affect positive change. This is at the core of the mission of our Foundation; WWKD helps the people of Haiti create a sustainable environment by providing housing, food, education, and medical aid for families in impoverished Haiti. As we approach the 4th anniversary of losing Kelsey, with our hearts heavy, we want to share with you an urgent plan for a Christmas 2021 drive.

In the next 2 weeks, WWKD aspires to raise $5,000, to be utilized by WWKD in partnership again with Danita’s Children’s Malnutrition Program**. The program serves both inpatient and outpatient children. Its goal is to reduce infant malnutrition and lower the mortality rate in children across Haiti by providing access to medical care for treatable illnesses. The program most often treats infants and children suffering from severe acute malnutrition, protein deficiency, anemia, dehydration, and infectious diseases. Below are some statistics on malnutrition in Haiti:

  • 22% of children in Haiti are chronically malnourished
  • 100,000 children under 5 suffer acute malnutrition
  • 1 in 3 is stunted or irreversibly short for their age
  • $69 will treat one child for malnutrition and can help save their life

This is where WWKD will step in and help! In 2019, the malnutrition program treated 1086 children in the pediatric hospital and 264 children in their partner clinic in the rural mountains. If we are able to reach the $5,000 goal, we will be able to assist 73 children receive life-saving nutrition.  But we can’t do it without your help!

Your support makes a critical difference in a child’s life.  Whether it’s $5 or $500 or somewhere in-between, your help is needed now! Help keep Kelsey’s legacy alive!

Thank you, for whatever you are able to do.

Lisa Shaffer
